June F. Stanton

LAKEVILLE — June F. Stanton, 96, formerly of Farnam Road, died July 7, 2011, at Noble Horizons. She was the loving wife of the late John Stanton.

June was born June 30, 1915, in Millerton, daughter of the late Caroline (Sickendick) and Fred Barth.

For many years she worked for the Salisbury Bank & Trust Co. She was a cofounder of the Ladies Auxiliary and also was involved with the Lakeville Democratic Town Committee and other civic activities. She was a longtime communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Lakeville.

Ruth (Schmirer) Monroe

SHARON — Ruth (Schmirer) Monroe of Cornwall Bridge and Sharon quietly passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford on July 10, 2011.

She was born April 17, 1917, the daughter of Emily and Max Schmirer.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Helen and Hazel; her husband, Spencer C. Monroe; and her daughter, Sue (Monroe) Segalla.

She was first and foremost a wife, mother and homemaker.

Evelyn Hughes

STANFORDVILLE — Evelyn Hughes, 85, passed away on July 4, 2011, at Sharon Health Care Center.

She was born in Yonkers, N.Y., on Nov. 21, 1925, the daughter of the late Catherine and Charles Cavagnaro.

On July 13, 1947, she married Jack Hughes in Yonkers. Jack and Evelyn moved to Stanfordville in 1962. He predeceased her on March 2, 2007.

Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker and worked at the Carousel during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

She is survived by her son, John Hughes and his wife, Gail, of Stanfordville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Kenneth B. Rutledge

NORTH CANAAN — Kenneth B. Rutledge, 93, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., died June 28, 2011. He was the husband of the late Thelma Rutledge.

Mr. Rutledge was born June 3, 1918, in New York City, N.Y., the son of the late Ann (Kennedy) and James T. Rutledge.

A smart and colorful man, he served as a lieutenant during World War II. Following his service to our country, Mr. Rutledge began a career with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring as postmaster with the North Canaan post office.

He cherished his wife of 62 years and his family.

Florence Shoifet

MILLERTON — Florence Shoifet, 88, a longtime Millerton resident, died June 29, 2011, at the Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

For 25 years, Miss Shoifet was a supervisor at the Gateway Drive-In Restaurant. She also worked for the Senior Nutrition Center in Lakeville.

Born March 25, 1923, in Sharon, she was the daughter of late Rose (Weiner) and the Rabbi Barnett Shoifet. She was a 1941 graduate of Housatonic Regional High School.

Memorial service – Carol Stewart

NORTH CANAAN — Carol Stewart, the widow of Daniel Stewart, passed away March 6, 2011.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on July 16 at the Falls Village Congregational Church on Beebe Hill Road at 2 p.m. Family and friends are welcome. A reception at the church will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Canaan Volunteer Ambulance, 15 Main St., North Canaan, CT 06018.

Appreciation – A. Whitney Ellsworth

A. Whitney Ellsworth clearly put the same care and attention to his local commitments as he did to his international ones.

As a member of the Salisbury Housing Committee’s Board of Directors, he gave wise counsel regarding the low-income rental housing supported through the years by the Ellsworth family.

Most recently he gave meticulous attention to our bylaws and articles of incorporation so we would be ready to work with federal agencies to provide more low-income rental housing in Salisbury.

Janice ‘Jane’ Tiffany

DANIELSON, Conn. — Janice “Jane” Tiffany, 75, died June 16, 2011, at Villa Maria Nursing Home in Plainfield. She was the widow of Clifford P. Tiffany.

She was born in Winsted on Sept. 21, 1935, daughter of the late Ethel (Alexander) and John Duyser.

Mrs. Tiffany was a graduate of The Gilbert School in Winsted and the University of Connecticut and Rhode Island College. She taught for many years at Killingly Central School. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, Conn.
