Carol A. Collette

AMENIA — Carol A. Collette, 69, a longtime area resident, died May 9, 2011. She made her home in Wassaic for many years and recently lived in Amenia. She was most recently a resident of The Kent nursing home.

Carol was born on March 15, 1942, in Potsdam, N.Y. She was raised in Malone and Chateaugay, N.Y. She graduated from Chateaugay Central High School in 1961. She went to work at the Wassaic Developmental Center in 1966 and retired with 21 years of service as a therapy aide.

Carolyn L. (Knowles) Robertson

SALISBURY — Carolyn L. (Knowles) Robertson, 92, passed away May 3, 2011, at Noble Horizons. She was the widow of Reginal J. Robertson, who passed away in 1980.

Carolyn was born Aug. 26, 1918, in Gloucester, Mass., a daughter of the late Gertrude (Critchet) and Elliott R. Knowles. She graduated from Gloucester High School and later became an X-ray technician.

She and Reginal were married on July 19, 1941, and moved to Lakeville, where she worked at Sharon Hospital and later became a CNA and worked at Noble Horizons.

Martha Kutteles

AMENIA — Martha Kutteles, 68, of Lake Wales, Fla., passed away May 7, 2011, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, N.Y. She was the wife of Albert P. Kutteles.

Martha was born Jan. 13, 1943, in Sharon, the daughter of the late Eddna (Simmon) and Milbert Johnson. She graduated from Webutuck High School.

She worked for Wilson and Eaton and the Wassaic state school, was a secretary at Tri Wall and worked for the World Peace Society. She was a member of the Amenia Women’s Auxiliary.

Nancy (McCullough) Griggs

WEST CORNWALL — Nancy (McCullough) Griggs, 90, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, died May 2, 2011, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Canaan. She was a former resident of West Cornwall.

She was born May 29, 1920, in Summerville, Pa., the daughter of Helen and Mark McCullough. She graduated from Lewisburg High School in Lewisburg, Pa., where she was salutatorian of the class of 1938. She was a graduate of Bucknell University, class of 1942.

In December 1942, she married her college sweetheart, David Griggs, who predeceased her in 2008.

Madeline (Mix) Hunter

SHARON — A funeral service will be held for Madeline (Mix) Hunter on Saturday, May 14, at 10:45 a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 50 Leedsville Road in Amenia Union. It will be followed by a celebration of her life at her family home at 80 Amenia Union Road in Sharon.
The family hopes that all who knew her will attend and bring their memories to share.

Barbara (Hansl) Griggs

SALISBURY — Barbara (Hansl) Griggs, 94, died at Noble Horizons on May 5, 2011.

She was born Feb. 21, 1917, in New York City to lawyer Raleigh Hansl and early feminist and journalist Eva vom Baur Hansl, who founded the first women’s page in a New York City newspaper.

Gary Matthew Gilligan

SHEFFIELD — Gary Matthew Gilligan, 68, of Bow Wow Road in Sheffield died May 1, 2011, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

A native and lifelong resident of Sheffield, Gary was born Nov. 23, 1942, the son of the late Eleanor (Cande) and Matthew Gilligan. He graduated from Mount Everett High School with the class of 1960 and in 1964 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Maine.

Gary is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Janet Pendleton. The couple was married Aug. 1, 1965, in Islesboro, Maine.

Ivan A. Chodan Sr.

AMENIA — Ivan A. Chodan Sr., 83, a longtime resident of Amenia, died May 6, 2011, at Sharon Health Care Center. Mr. Chodan was a farmer who worked for several years at Bel Aire Farm in Amenia.

He was born Jan. 1, 1929, in Sheldon, Wis., the son of the late Emily (Gorla) and John Chodan. On April 18, 1952, he married Malvina Bellich in Trieste, Italy. She survives at home. Mr. Chodan served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.
