Nancy (McCullough) Griggs

WEST CORNWALL — Nancy (McCullough) Griggs, 90, died May 2, 2011, at Geer Village. She was the widow of David G. Griggs. Services will be held on Monday, May 9, with committal at the North Cornwall Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. and memorial service at the United Church of Christ in Cornwall, Bolton Hill Road, at 2:30 p.m. A full obituary will appear in the May 12 Lakeville Journal and Millerton News.

Josephine J. Palumbo

COPAKE — Josephine J. Palumbo, 95, of Taconic Shores in Copake passed away on April 30, 2011, at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck, N.Y. She was the widow of Anthony Palumbo.

She was born on Dec. 1, 1915, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the daughter of the late Mary (Skiba) and John Kowalski.

A homemaker, Mrs. Palumbo moved to Copake 30 years ago from Poughkeepsie.

At one time, she and her husband, Anthony, were members of the Poughkeepsie Elks Club, along with the Roe Jan-area Young at Hearters.

Jane (Vernik) Henry

PINE PLAINS — Jane (Vernik) Henry, 61, of McKee, Ky., died peacefully on Sunday, May 1, 2011, in Destin, Fla., while vacationing with family and friends. Jane had battled cancer for the past several years.

She was the wife of Patrick Henry of McKee.

Born on March 28, 1950, in Monroe, Conn., and raised in Sharon Springs, N.Y., she was the daughter of Thaddeus Vernik of Dunnellon, Fla., and the late Marie Swendsen Vernik.

Violet I. Boyles

ANCRAMDALE — Violet I. Boyles, 80, died April 27, 2011, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. On May 15, 1949, in Pine Plains, she married Clifford “Red” Boyles Sr. He survives her at home.

She was born in Ancram, N.Y., on Aug. 12, 1930, the daughter of the late Bertha (Kepler) and Milton Miller.

Mrs. Boyles was a seamstress at the dress factory in Pine Plains.
She was a member of the Ancramdale First Presbyterian Church.

WINSTED — Steven C. Ashner of Winsted died April 23, 2011. Celebration of life to be held April 30 at Canaan United Methodist Church. Montano-Shea Funeral Home has care of arrangements.

WINSTED — C. Joseph Cornelio of Wethersfield died April 21, 2011. Funeral services were held April 26 at St. Joseph Church, Winsted. Maloney Funeral Home had care of arrangements.

Mary Leontine Herbst

NORWALK — Mary Leontine (Lee) Herbst died March 19, 2011, at the age of 101, following a long illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Arthur Herbst.

She was born May 23, 1909, in South Manchester, the daughter of the late Mary Leontine Gueniat and Celestian Bohrer, both from Switzerland.

Appreciation – Christopher Morley

I am shocked and saddened by the news of Chris Morley’s passing. I am one of the many artists he helped along the way.

At a time when my work as a painter vacillated between being a sideline or my livelihood, Chris supported my work in significant ways. He enthusiastically helped to host and promote the Salisbury show that was pivotal in taking my career to a professional level.

Reginald Norris

SHARON — Reginald Norris died April 21, 2011, of cancer. He was born in Jacksonville, Ill., on July 28, 1936, to Mary (Schultz) and Reginald Norris.

After completing his military service obligation he moved to New York City and worked at various jobs while pursuing a business degree at New York University.

He worked over the years for Banker’s Trust, REA Express, Diversified Mortgage Investors, Interway and Transamerica. For the past 20 years he worked as a consultant helping small companies with financial and partnership issues.

Stephanie (Layton) Schwarze

PAWLING, N.Y. — Stephanie (Layton) Schwarze, 34, passed away suddenly on April 21, 2011, at home.
In her typical way of serving others, she kept her suffering and disease process hidden from family and friends to keep them from suffering.

She was born in Sharon on June 16, 1976, the daughter of Jane H. and James “Mott” Layton of Boynton Beach, Fla.

Stephanie was well-known for her hard work and her desire to succeed. She unselfishly helped many people in her lifetime as a good person, as a nurse and as a yoga instructor.

Charlotte Newton

KENT — Charlotte Newton, 96, of South Kent, passed away on April 16, 2011, at the Kent Health Facility. She was the wife of William H. Newton.

Mrs. Newton was born Sept. 24, 1914, in Danbury, daughter of the late Clara (Beyer) and Eric Hagman. She was a graduate of Kent Center School, Connecticut State College and the University of Connecticut, where she excelled in basketball and field hockey.
