Leo Richard Segalla

NORTH CANAAN — Leo Richard Segalla, 86, passed away peacefully in his hometown of North Canaan on Feb. 5, 2011.

He was the son of the late Teresa (Coppiello) and Elio Segalla. Leo was born Aug. 1, 1924, on the family homestead in North Canaan, and was a lifelong resident. Leo was one of 10 siblings.

Madeline (Mix) Hunter

SHARON — Madeline (Mix) Hunter, 66, lost her brief yet valiant battle with cancer on Feb. 1, 2011, in her home, surrounded by loved ones.

Madeline was born Oct. 23, 1944, in Fort Benning, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Alice (Schwab) and Theodore Mix.

Madeline traveled the world in her youth before assuming responsibility of the family business, Magnamusic, which she successfully ran for 40 years.

Virginia (Burgwin) Vincent

SALISBURY —Virginia (Burgwin) Vincent, 84, died peacefully at home on Feb. 4, 2011. “Bunny,”  as she was known during her lifetime, was born April 27, 1926, in Sewickley, Pa., to Adelaide D. Jones and John O. Burgwin.

She attended the Sewickley Academy, the Madeira School and the Carnegie Institute of Technology, now known as Carnegie Mellon University, from which she graduated with honors and a BFA degree in theater design in 1948.

Ed Lipton

FALLS VILLAGE — Ed Lipton, 76, died in New York City on Jan. 23, 2011.

He was born in 1934 in New York City, the son of Sara and Michael Lipton.

In the 1950s, Ed signed up for a week at Camp Isabella Freedman, which was then a vacation spot for young adults. He enjoyed that week so much that he extended his stay.

Rita (Weisberg) Friedman

SALISBURY — Rita (Weisberg) Friedman, 88, died peacefully on Feb. 7, 2011, of heart failure after protracted respiratory illness.

She was the widow of Sidney Friedman and was his devoted wife until his death 10 years ago.

She was a retired teacher and co-author of “The Letter People,” an elementary school reading program still used by schools nationwide.

She is survived by her beloved son, Alan Friedman of New York City and Salisbury, and his wife, Marylene; and her grandchildren, Marc and David Aaron Friedman.
