Helen A. Riley

SHARON — Helen A. Riley, 84, a lifelong area resident, died peacefully on Feb.12,  2019 at her home in Sharon.  Helen worked for many years as an operating room technician at Sharon Hospital. She was also a homemaker and hospice volunteer for nearly 25 years in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut. 

Lewis J. Pennell

NORFOLK — Lewis J. Pennell, 58 passed away with loved ones by his side on Sunday, Feb. 10, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. Lew took nothing in life for granted, and will be remembered most for his kindness, dedication and generosity of spirit. 

Alyce M. Larkin

GALLATIN, N.Y. – Alyce M. Larkin, 69, passed away on Feb. 5, 2019, at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 

She was born on Nov. 1, 1949, in Rhinebeck, N.Y., the daughter of Thomas and Alice E. (Wheeler) Remsburger Jr. 

Mrs. Larkin was a teacher’s aide for Pine Plains Central School District in Pine Plains. 

She was a charter member of the Pine Plains Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed doing family genealogy and antiquing and she loved cats.

Sandra J. Marshall

MILLERTON — Sandra J. Marshall, 73, of Tupper Lake, N.Y., died Jan. 29, 2019, at the Alice Center in Malone, N.Y.

Born on July 3, 1945, in Norwich, N.Y., she was the daughter of Elizabeth (Arnold) and Albert Anderson. She graduated from Webutuck High School in 1964.

On Dec. 22, 1973, she married John W. Marshall Sr. in Sharon. He predeceased her on Nov. 4, 2002.

Sandra was employed at theWassaic Developmental Center and the Harlem Valley Psychiatric Hospital in Wingdale, N.Y., retiring after 30 years of service.

Dr. Laurence C. ‘Topper’ Smith

NORTH CANAAN — Dr. Laurence C. “Topper” Smith, 84, passed away in Denver, Colo., on Jan. 25, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.

Laurence was born and raised in North Canaan, the son of the late Loretta (Donsbough) Smith, a long time teacher in Falls Village.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Debra Smith; his brother, Peter; his former wife, Mary Gertrude Smith,née Paquette, of Kent and Denver; and his 10 children, 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

John Thomas Luning

SALISBURY  — John Thomas Luning died on Feb. 3, 2019, of pancreatic cancer, a disease he mercifully suffered for a very short time.   Family and friends are mourning the passing of a kind, gracious, witty, quirky and decent man.  He had just reached 79 years on Jan. 19.  As he was every night, his cat, Kitty, was at the foot of the bed as John passed.

Virginia Elizabeth (Eaton) (Sturges) Ferranti

NORTH CANAAN — Virginia Elizabeth (Eaton) (Sturges) Ferranti, widow of Thomas Dominic Ferranti, went to be with Jesus on Feb. 3, 2019. 

She was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Great Barrington, the daughter of Marion (Anson) and Hamilton “Hammy” Eaton of Lakeville.  

She graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in 1951. She also graduated from St. Mary’s Baby Hospital in Albany, N.Y. 

Betty J. Clinch

PINE PLAINS — Betty J. Clinch, 89, passed away on Feb. 1, 2019, at The Baptist Home in Rhinebeck. 

She was born on Jan. 16, 1930, in Poughkeepsie, the daughter of Myra (Selfridge) and Foster Hoysradt.

She was an avid bowler, and a member of the Wildcat League in Great Barrington. 

Betty was a sales clerk for more than 20 years at B.H. Delsons in Millerton. 

She was also a waitress at the Village Diner at Gateway in Millerton, and drove a school bus for the Pine Plains Central School District. 

Kathryn ‘Dolly’ Thorpe

PINE PLAINS — Kathryn “Dolly” Thorpe, 83, passed away on Jan. 29, 2019, at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck.

She was born on April 17, 1935, in West Taghkanic, N.Y., the daughter of Beulah (Coon) and Earl Tomkins.

Mrs. Thorpe worked at ITW in Lakeville for many years.

Her passion was her family. She loved to be surrounded by her children.
