PINEP PLAINS — Dressed in their best concert attire, the fourth- and fifth-grade students at Seymour Smith Intermediate Learning Center (ILC) rang in the holiday season with their annual winter concert on Thursday, Dec. 5. 

Long before the concert began at 7 p.m., the Seymour Smith ILC gymnasium was filled with families eager to see their little songbirds perform.

The bridge is back

The Dutchess County Department of Public Works’ work on bridge PP-12 on Amenia-Pine Plains Road (CR 83) in the town of Pine Plains is complete and the road has reopened to traffic. The project began in September and involved replacing the existing bridge with a pre-cast structure and the addition of 4-foot shoulders. Final paving and minor landscape work will be completed in the spring. Amenia-Pine Plains Road averages approximately 430 vehicles per day.

PINE PLAINS— The Town Board discussed numerous issues at its December board meeting, many in preparation for its January meeting on Thursday, Jan. 17. 
In December, it noted that it would like to thank artisan Anthony Silvia for making the new signs welcoming motorists to Pine Plains. Signs are placed on Route 199, past Sunny Meadows Farm on the right, and then on Route 199, past the Highway Department and the high school on the left. 
Town Supervisor Darrah Cloud praised Silvia, who has a sign painting business on Route 82 in town.

Speeders beware

ANCRAM— The Ancram Highway Department deployed the second of two radar signs last week. The latest one is on Route 82 southbound into Ancram.  The first sign went up in Ancramdale on County Route 8 by Crest Lane in early December. 
According to town Supervisor Art Bassin, it’s all in an effort to slow traffic down in the hamlets of Ancram and Ancramdale. 
Highway Superintendent Jim Miller reported that he has gotten positive feedback on the signs from residents who live near where the signs have been installed.

Will charging stations for electric cars drive economic activity?

PINE PLAINS — This fall, the town of Pine Plains has attracted a new population of motorists passing through, thanks to a charging station for electric cars that’s been installed behind the Bank of Millbrook, at 2971 Church St. (Route 199).
In light of the growing popularity of electric vehicles, town Supervisor Darrah Cloud watched as several towns in the surrounding area, such as Ancram and Hillsdale, installed charging stations to attract visiting motorists.

Pine Plains Superintendent Martin Handler’s contract extended

PINE PLAINS — The Pine Plains Central School District’s Board of Education (BOE) announced its success in securing Superintendent Martin Handler’s services for an additional year by extending his contract to cover the 2020-21 school year.
According to BOE President Chip Couse, the decision to extend the contract came from a casual conversation. While discussing Handler’s salary for the coming year, the board asked if Handler would stay for another year, and Handler agreed.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County supports county homeowners

PINE PLAINS — Volunteers came together to lend their neighbors a helping hand at Rebuilding Together Dutchess County’s (RTDC) annual Fall Rebuilding Month in October to complete necessary repairs for six local homeowners, including one in the town of Pine Plains.
Aimed at repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives, RTDC provides critical home repairs free of charge to low-income homeowners to allow them to live independently in a warm, safe and dry environment.
