Today is another hot and humid day in a summer that has seen many of them. Despite recent rains, the rivers remain low and the sun is bright and my garden still thirsts for rain. Some folks like it hot and muggy but I am not one of them. Today is the kind of day I wish I were at the beach, rather than in a room without air conditioning.

Actually, my garden is doing well this summer because I have carefully weeded and watered it and all that warm sunshine is making my vegetables grow with vigor. The dry weather also means there is less powdery mildew on the leaves of the wild...

Hikers Anonymous

The Country Curmudgeon

I think we may need a chapter of Hikers Anonymous around here. The Appalachian Trail has a lot to do with it. I am totally mystified by hikers.

The first thing seems pretty basic to me. We’ve got cars and stuff to get around in. Mankind has been trying to get around this walking thing for centuries and we are finally almost there. So what’s the point?  People drive cars to the Appalachian Trail, then get out and walk. Eventually they walk back to their car and drive again. Seems like a lot of bother.

Our planet’s bucket list, if time doesn’t run out

A View From the Edge

If an expert proved to you that you had 40 years to see one of the world’s marvels — take the pyramids for example — before the pyramids crumbled to dust, would you not make immediate plans not to miss the experience at Giza?

If 85 percent of the world’s leading experts are agreed that global climate change will bring about a rise in the ocean levels, coupled with severe flooding and typhoon/hurricane events within two lifetimes from now, would you not pay attention?

Last week marked a turning point for this country — one that brought its human rights record nearer to where it should be considering the United States is heralded as the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Does spelling count?

The Country Curmudgeon

“Does spelling count?” The cry of the American student. It seems there is a lot of stuff that “doesn’t count” anymore, things that I was brought up to believe in.

The societal effects of grocery prices

Rising food costs, which have increased about 12 percent over the last decade, may not be a major concern to the poorest of the poor. Most receive their food via government safety-net programs via food stamps that locally have seen a 97 percent increase in the last four years.

Mistaken War on Terror

A View From the Edge

I was always puzzled by the look on George Bush’s face in that kindergarten classroom. It wasn’t the look of shock over 9/11; there was something else there.

After listening to a recap of the hunt for Bin Laden on the always excellent BBC program “The Reith Lectures” (here’s the link: www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/r4choice; look for Documentary of the Week dated Sept. 13), I think I know what it is: “Those CIA guys were right nine months ago, and I’m going to get the blame.”

Films about working mothers: Beware what you believe

Consider This

As a working mother, I would much rather be represented by Julianna Margulies than Sarah Jessica Parker, any day of the week. Margulies plays the character of Alicia Florrick on CBS’s “The Good Wife.” Sarah Jessica Parker is currently starring as an overworked mom in the recently released movie, “I Don’t Know How She Does It.”
