MILLBROOK — Each year the citizens of Millbrook and the town of Washington gather on Veterans Green, at the 11th hour on the 11th day  of the 11th month. The size of the crowd is sometimes dependent on the weather, but there are those who never miss the chance to give thanks for service rendered by those still remaining soldiers. Though a day for the living, it’s also a time to remember those who were lost in war, or have since died.

Savoring the taste of summer (tomatoes)

MILLERTON — McEnroe Organic Farm had an idyllic summer afternoon to celebrate one of the season’s most popular fruits at its Tomato Festival on Saturday, Aug. 10.
In view of how McEnroe’s is known for its tomatoes — not to mention how a tomato is in its logo — Farm Education Director Alison Elliott said, “It makes sense that we have a Tomato Festival and I’m excited to bring people together. I’m excited for everyone to try our tomatoes in a different way.”

A sign of the times…

The time has come to say one last goodbye to Saperstein’s in Millerton, as its familiar orange sign was taken down on Monday, Aug. 12. Aimed at changing the face of the building, Scott Dean of Dean Builders explained that James Hendrick, the current owner of the  Main Street building, “just wants to get it off and assess the situation.” The Saperstein’s building is currently on the market, with an asking price of $850,000.

Remembering former Mayor Dan Cuddeback Sr.

MILLERTON — When the village of Millerton received news of Dan Cuddeback Sr.’s passing late last month, a good number of loved ones and local well-wishers came forward to share memories of a man who took pride in serving his community.
Cuddeback passed away in his Millerton home on Friday, July 27, at the age of 81.

Big Trucks, big fun

MILLERTON — Teaming up with a number of agencies, the NorthEast-Millerton Library invited young readers to explore the many vehicles used by local, county and state officials to keep communities safe and sound, at the Big Truck Day program on Tuesday, July 30. 
The North East Fire District annex building opened to children and their families, allowing a closer look at where some of the most important vehicles are stored.

MILLERTON — After sending local children on a month-long scavenger hunt throughout the village of Millerton in search of Waldo, Oblong Junior rewarded participants with a party at the bookstore on Wednesday, July 31.
“It’s been such a success — everybody has been really into it,” said Therese Stanford, a bookseller at Oblong Junior.

North Center Street fire draws quick response

MILLERTON — Local residents and pedestrians watched curiously as a stretch of North Center Street in Millerton was swarmed with fire personnel who responded to a report of a house fire on Friday morning, Aug. 2.
While its origins have yet to be determined, the fire broke out at 31 North Center St. Though the building itself contains a few apartments, Millerton Building Inspector Kenneth McLaughlin explained that the structure has been zoned as a non-residential building within a residential district.

Grant comes through for highway garage project

North East — Moving full steam ahead with phase one of the new highway garage facility to be shared with the village of Millerton, the town of North East just received word that it’s been awarded $327,000 from the county through the 2019 Municipal Innovation Grant (MIG) Program. 
Town Supervisor George Kaye said he had heard earlier that the grant was coming through, but originally thought it was for less money.
