MILLERTON — The North East Community Center (NECC) was one of six recipients to be awarded funding recently through Dutchess County’s 2019 Community Development Block Grant (CBDG) program.

Totaling $150,000 this year, the CBDG program aspires to address critical public service needs throughout the county. The program’s grant awards also contribute to almost $1.5 million in funding awarded this year through the CBDG and HOME Investment Partnership programs to improve accessibility, address critical public service needs and expand affordable housing options.

Hobnobbing at the library

January public hearing set for proposed solar PILOT program

NORTH EAST— The Town Board held a lightly-attended monthly meeting on Thursday, Dec. 13, at which it took care of a few municipal matters. The main issue raised that evening had to do with the town’s Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) program for solar energy applications.
A resolution was passed for the PILOT program, which will be further discussed at a public hearing set for Thursday, Jan. 10, at 7:15 p.m. at Town Hall.
According to town Supervisor George Kaye, New York state has exempted all property that is being utilized for solar farms.

Farmhouse chic

In the grocery store checkout line one morning, I noticed a magazine near the chocolate bar rack. Christmas Farmhouse. Turns out, there is a slew of these periodicals. Farm House Magazine. American Farmhouse Style.  Country Farmhouse Decor. 
This decor is often weathered mirror frames or whitewashed pine tables or sandblasted butter molds — things you wouldn’t find in a real farm house today.

Baking and building

The North East Community Center in Millerton held its annual gingerbread house workshop on Friday, Dec. 14. Local children and their families decorated gingerbread houses while the movie “White Christmas” played in the background. Hot chocolate was also provided. By the end of the afternoon, a total of 41 gingerbread houses had been decorated. Lauren Was Eckstrom helped her daughter, Holiday, decorate her gingerbread house just in time for Christmas.

Millerton’s Senior Friendship Center moves to Annex

MILLERTON— Senior citizens who have been finding good food and cheerful companionship at the lunch program at the Senior Friendship Center in the Village Hall will have a new home as of Wednesday, Jan. 2, where they are hoping even more residents will join them.
