MILLERTON — The 2019 Town of North East/Village of Millerton Comprehensive Plan inched closer to its finalization as the Village Board and the Town Board hosted a joint public hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. to allow the public to raise any comments or concerns about the plan. A Comprehensive Plan lays out a framework for municipalities to lean on while planning for their communities for the next 10 to 15 years.

Volunteers needed to spruce up Rail Trail

MILLERTON -— Spending a sunny day walking or bicycling on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail can be a great way to pass the time, but sometimes Mother Nature needs a little hand for the adventure to go well. 
Fortunately, a number of good Samaritans — more of whom will be needed on April 13 — have already begun the work that will ensure the experience is the best that it can be.

Eco Challenge eco events

MILLERTON — Townscape is offering an Eco Challenge through Friday, April 12. Pick up a tabulation booklet at any Main Street merchant or log onto www.millertonecochallenge.com. The login code is “ecosite.” Keep a daily record of plastic use. Check a box under each heading for each item used.
Turn in the results at the free movie, “The Human Element,” at The Moviehouse on Sunday, April 14, at 11 a.m., or at any Main Street store.
Total results to be published on Earth Day, April 22, at the website mentioned above.

Full STEAM ahead

The STEAM Club took off at the NorthEast-Millerton Library on Friday, March 29, as teacher Lynn Buckley taught five young readers about the science behind flying with Simple Planes. After learning more about how things fly and Newton’s Laws of Motion, they crafted different types of airplanes out of paper and paperclips before testing which ones would fly the farthest, longest and most precise distance.

Community Conversation: Housing talk scheduled for April 12

MILLERTON — Come Friday, April 12, the North East Community Center (NECC) in Millerton will partner with Hudson River Housing to host a Community Conversation on “Housing: A Key to a Strong Local Community.”
Designed as a regional approach for rural communities such as the towns of North East, Amenia and Pine Plains, the Community Conversation will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Post 178 building, located at 155 Route 44 in Millerton.

Winners’ plans after Millerton election

MILLERTON — Millerton residents cast their ballots last Tuesday, March 19, to vote in this year’s village election. There were open seats for mayor and two village trustee positions. Additionally, there was a referendum to change the month of the general village election from March to June.
Incumbent candidate Debbie Middlebrook campaigned for her second two-year term as mayor while Jennifer Najdek ran for a second two-year term as village trustee. Newcomer Joshua Schultz ran for the other open trustee seat.

Mr. Kennan goes to Washington to talk about sewer solutions

NORTH EAST — Always a dedicated public servant, on his most recent trip to this nation’s capital, North East Councilman Chris Kennan made a point of stopping in on Congressman Antonio Delgado (D-NY19) to talk business. Though in Washington, D.C., for family  business, Kennan said it was important he talk to the congressman about the town’s need for a sewer. The town of North East is working with the village of Millerton, which is actively pursuing a waste water solution.

Lucky Luke the dog celebrates his sweet 16th birthday

MILLERTON — From the moment they found him to their decision to bring him home, the lives of Macey Levin and his wife, Gloria Miller, were changed for the better when they rescued their dog, Luke. As a celebration of Luke’s remarkable journey, they hosted a party for his 16th birthday at the Millerton Veterinary Practice on Saturday, March 16.
