MILLBROOK — In late September, the eighth-grade class at Dutchess Day School (DDS) experienced a three-day canoeing adventure in the Adirondacks, a chance to develop individual and group wilderness skills while celebrating their role as the “seniors” of the school and preparing for the challenges ahead in the coming year.

They paddled across the Saranac Lakes, through bogs and woods, past rocky shores, high cliffs and sandy beaches, learning how to navigate and to negotiate an overland portage and the hand-operated lock between Middle and Lower Saranac...

Every move you make...

MILLERTON — Strategic minds were challenged to a battle on the chess board as the NorthEast-Millerton Library hosted the Fourth Annual Millerton Chess Open on Saturday, Aug. 10. Sponsored by the library’s Chess Club, the tournament kicked off the first round of games at 10 a.m., ushering in a medley of players ages five to 75. Focusing their attention entirely on the game, the players were careful to calculate each move in their advancement across the chess board.

In the heat of the month

Though it will have to go some to beat the July heat, August is the time when baseball games feel like they are being played in a sauna, and the season, which to me started the day before yesterday, is beginning to take its final shape.
Boston has endured a very long losing streak and would seem to be done. Why? The same reason that bedevils all losing teams — pitching. The Sox score plenty of runs, but the guys on the mound, especially the starters, have let them down with a consistency that bespeaks a World Series hangover of biblical proportions.

Millbrook Horse Trials, now gone but not forgotten

judithb@millertonnews.com

MILLBROOK — The Millbrook Horse Trials are over, but they are not going to be forgotten any time soon, with four days of glorious summer weather. There was a burst of storms on Saturday that canceled one event, but otherwise the weather, camaraderie and sportsmanship were all that could be hoped for by those at the trials.

Dover Babe Ruth baseball team wins championship

editor@millertonnews.com

DOVER — The Dover Babe Ruth team was victorious over Region One at the championship game on Wednesday, July 31. The game was played at home, and drew a crowd of fans and supporters for both teams.
According to team parent Alicia Noonan, the team pulled together with Alex Marino “picking up the win in relief with 11 K’s to shut down Region One.”
A “K” is a swinging strikeout, according to Wikipedia.
Marino helped energize the offense with a triple in the bottom of the fourth, with Dover trailing 3-0.

Trade War of another sort

As of this moment, the Major League trade deadline has come and gone. Thank heavens! Though much thought about, talked about, and anticipated, it is not a high point of my bleacher view of the season. If anything, quite the reverse.
