Stissing Mountain basketball round-up: Pine Plains finds victory in weekend competitions

PINE PLAINS — Fortune favored the Pine Plains junior varsity and varsity basketball teams this past weekend.
On Friday, Dec. 14, the Stissing Mountain Junior/Senior High School junior varsity boys basketball team defeated John A. Coleman Catholic High School at home, 62–35.
The Bombers were led by George Bruce, who scored a total of 21 points. Zach Strang scored 16 points for the Bombers while teammate Greg Starzyk scored nine points.

Pine Plains basketball triumphs in opening game

PINE PLAINS— The Pine Plains varsity girls basketball team won their opening game of the season on Friday, Nov. 30.
The team defeated Yonkers Montessori Academy 58–29.
With Coach Craig Brodhead and Assistant Coach Erin Doyle at the helm, this year’s team includes two senior players, four juniors and several underclassmen.
As the Lady Bombers faced off against their opponent, Emily Torre scored 14 points for Pine Plains while Emma Hall scored 10 points. Also for Pine Plains, Autumn Smith scored eight points.

Family Fitness Factory: gym opens in Millerton

MILLERTON — Maria Tamburrino and Chad Breyette have opened the Family Fitness Factory at the Thompson Plaza in the space formerly occupied by North East Fitness and Wellness.
The renovated facility has “something for everyone” from adults to seniors to teenagers, according to gym spokesman Chris Mayville. Exercise equipment includes Nautilus, cardio, treadmills and stationary bikes. On-site massage therapy is also available.

Buddhi Tribe aligns with Women’s Support Services

MILLERTON— Beyond her work in improving area residents’ health and sense of balance at her Millerton studio, Buddhi Tribe owner Kate Shanley has made it her mission to offer support to those who need it most. She hosted a fundraiser to benefit Women’s Support Services at the end of October, which she now says will hopefully become one of many.

Second in the state: Millbrook girls volleyball: close, but not quite

MILLBROOK — So close, and yet so far. This may have crossed the minds of the players, their families and friends as the Millbrook girls volleyball team lost the final game on Sunday, Nov. 18, in Glens Falls.  It lost to Portville after two days of the state tournament games, which ran Nov. 17 and 18. Many Blazer fans made the trek to watch, cheer and support the team.
Coach Shawn Stoliker was proud of what the team has accomplished this season, finishing second in the state.

Lady Bombers: basketball Only varsity this year

PINE PLAINS — As a result of low enrollment, the Pine Plains Central School District Board of Education announced at its meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 14, that the district won’t be hosting a girls junior varsity basketball team this year.
Superintendent of Schools Martin Handler explained that the decision not to have a girls junior varsity team was a matter of numbers. When it came time to register for basketball, only 14 students signed up, which was enough for one varsity team but not for a varsity and a junior varsity team.
