North Canaan

NORTH CANAAN — Christian Allyn, a 23–year–old selectman from North Canaan, visited The Cobb School in Simsbury on Election Day to talk with elementary students about his path to public service, the role of local government, and the importance of voting. Allyn, a 2017 graduate of the University of Connecticut with degrees in horticulture and resource economics, has a passion for public service, and his message of “getting involved” was powerful.

New mower, sidewalk upgrades in the budget

NORTH CANAAN — Roadside mowing in North Canaan may get a bit easier in the coming season. The selectmen voted at their regular meeting on Monday, April 2, to include the $42,500 purchase  of a new mower in the 2018-19 budget process.
The old mower is a 1976 model. First Selectman Charlie Perotti reported that the mowing arm from the old mower will fit the new mower, and that the old arm will accommodate a post-hole digger attachment.  A $500 value, the tool is being included with the new mower without additional charge.

Rosemary Keilty plans her future away from NCES

NORTH CANAAN — Among the items in her bag of “gifts,” North Canaan Elementary School Principal Rosemary Keilty has an exceptional one: She can almost magically see potential in anyone and anything.
That’s what makes her able to see the beauty in discarded chairs and a battered desk -— like the cast-offs in her office, which she painted and decorated so exquisitely that there is going to be a fight to see who gets them when she retires.

Will brewery open this summer?

NORTH CANAAN — Residents of North Canaan are eagerly awaiting the grand opening of Great Falls Brewing Company, which will occupy one wing of the historic Canaan Union Station.
The depot has been out of use for decades since an arson fire in 2001, but long-delayed renovations have been under way over the past year to bring the building back to life.
At a meeting of the North Canaan Exchange Club on Tuesday, March 20, Great Falls Brewing Company co-founder Chris Tripler said he expects to hold a soft opening for the brewery by midsummer.

Eichman new owner of Raynard and Peirce Realty

NORTH CANAAN — After working as a broker associate for the firm for several years, Wendy Eichman purchased Raynard and Peirce Realty on Feb. 14.
A resident of North Canaan, she says she sees indications that the real estate market here is in for a good year, as buyers recognize that there is positive change going on here — especially buyers with young families.
“We have affordable home prices in North Canaan, and that attracts young buyers,” she said.
