FALLS VILLAGE -- The Housatonic Valley Regional High School girls basketball team was defeated 52-34 by Trinity Catholic in a quarterfinal game at HVRHS Tuesday, March 5.

The loss ends a deep run into the state tournament (Class S) for the Mountaineers.

The Lady Crusaders led 13-2 at the end of the first quarter. Guards Emma Gardner and Caitlyn Scott played their HVRHS counterparts, Sierra O’Niel and Christina Winburn, very closely and were able to disrupt the Mountaineer offense.

O’Niel accounted for HVRHS’ first seven points.

Snow guaranteed

Volunteers with the Salisbury Winter Sports Association were busy making snow on Satre Hill last week, in preparation for this weekend’s Winter Carnival. The annual Jumpfest weekend will be Feb. 10 to 12.

Alpine ski jumping comes to Salisbury

SALISBURY — This weekend,the Salisbury Winter Sports Association (SWSA) begins its 2012 schedule with the Winter Carnival, featuring an exhibition of Gelande, or Alpine ski jumping.
Gelande is a new event for SWSA. It is a form of skiing in which the athletes ski jump off a tower — using regular downhill ski equipment.

Housy falls in overtime

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Mountaineers varsity basketball team lost by a mere five points in overtime against Northwestern at Housatonic Valley Regional High School on Jan. 20. The final score was 79-74.
Northwestern’s John Stevens was the high scorer of the game with 30 points. Connor Guiheen was second with 26 points.
For Housy, the high scorers were Tyler Dean, 18; Ray Mohring, 16; Wilson Terrall, 15; and Donyell Williams, 10.
Housy Athletic Director Dan Carroll said it was a good game between two good teams.

Hockey game ends in upset

LAKEVILLE — Sheehan High School of Wallingford upset the combined Housatonic Valley Regional High School-Northwestern-Wamogo (HNW) hockey team 4-2 on the Hotchkiss School rink on Jan. 20.
“It was a great game, and fun,” said Dean Diamond, HNW hockey coach. “We had three penalties, so that cost us.”
Diamond said his team had no offense in the second period, and that his team was shorthanded with a senior defenseman out with shoulder injuries.

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School wrestling team hosted Terryville High School on Jan. 11. Terryville won the match 72-10.
Coach Thomas Medonis reported the following individual scores for HVRHS athletes:

South Kent dominates Hotchkiss on the court

SOUTH KENT — The South Kent Cardinals basketball team bested the Hotchkiss Bearcats 105-72 on Jan. 11 in the Joseph Brown gymnasium on the South Kent campus.
Coach Kelvin Jefferson’s Cardinals have started strong in the new year, notching their third win in a row to bump their overall record to 8-4. Fred Benjamin’s young Bearcat team has lost a lot of close games and, despite their talent, now stand at 1-8 on the year.

Hike to end at Falls Village Inn

SALISBURY/FALLS VILLAGE — Peter Becks Village Store in Salisbury and the Falls Village Inn are teaming up Saturday, Jan. 21, for a Salisbury-to-Falls Village hike, with a meal at the inn at the conclusion.
The group will meet at Peter Becks, 19 Main St. in Salisbury, at 10:30 a.m. for the hike, which will go past the ski jumps and join the Appalachian Trail. The guided hike is of moderate difficulty, Peter Feen of Peter Becks said, and hikers may set their own pace.

Jacquier named HVRHS Athlete of the Week

FALLS VILLAGE — Dalton Jacquier has been named the Housatonic Valley Regional High School Athlete of the Week.
Jacquier, a senior, plays hockey for the school.
“It is a good, fast, hard, physical sport that keeps me in shape,” he said.
Next year, Jacquier will attend the State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill to study agricultural engineering. After his formal education is completed, Jacquier plans to work on his family farm in East Canaan.

Sharon Bridge scores announced

SHARON — There were five full tables for duplicate bridge at Good Neighbors on Low Road in Sharon on Dec. 21.Five boards a round were played, or 25 boards in total. The average score was 50.
For North South pairs, in first with 62 points (62 percent) were Trish Stimpson and Harry Hall; in second with 53.5 points (53.5 percent) were Catherine Brazelton and John Bevan, and in third with 52 points (52 percent) were Marguerite McGrath and her son, Brian.
