109 Cheese & Wine opened at its new location in the Kent Barns area, at 7 Fulling Lane, on Friday morning, April 5. The new shop has about three times as much seating as the shop’s old location on Main Street, with tables and chairs for 20 indoors on the main level and upstairs. In summer, there will be outdoor seating and eating. ‘Feeling the water’ is central to Housatonic dance performance

KENT — Not knowing what to expect from a performance that promised dancers in the Housatonic River, the audience of 45 gathered on Sunday, Aug. 19, open to the possibilities. 
On an overcast day that followed days of substantial rains, the brown-ish river was flowing deep, wide and fast.

Bringing the world to Kent with Kent Presents

Wynton Marsalis, the internationally acclaimed trumpeter and composer, was the closing speaker (and performer) of the 2018 Kent Presents festival. 
He started the session by thanking his fellow panelists, noting the numerous sessions that he’d personally attended and enjoyed, and the many notes he’d felt compelled to take during his three days at the festival.

Tales and tunes from Blood, Sweat & Tears’ Steve Katz

Obviously, Steve Katz is an expressive and lovely singer and an agile and exciting guitar player. He was, after all, a founding member of the seminal band The Blues Project and the famous band Blood, Sweat & Tears. 
So no, he didn’t need to establish his credentials as a rock star and talented musician during his sold-out talk and performance on Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Fife ‘n Drum Restaurant in Kent.

Rain didn’t discourage visits to Kent Sidewalk Festival

KENT — Started more than 30 years ago as a simple sidewalk sale, the Kent Sidewalk Festival has grown to a four-day extravaganza of shopping, dining, entertainment and activities of every shape and size.
This year’s festival was held from Thursday, Aug. 2, to Sunday, Aug. 5. 
Lyn Stirnweiss of the Kent Chamber of Commerce said the festival now attracts locals and visitors in growing numbers.

Solving the world’s problems at Kent Presents

KENT — All those topics that have been keeping you up late at night worrying are going to be discussed at this year’s Kent Presents, which is happening in and around the campus of the Kent School from Thursday, Aug. 16,  to Saturday, Aug. 18. 
For those who haven’t experienced it yet, Kent Presents describes itself as an “ideas festival,” and it’s been held one August weekend each year since 2015.

Task force forms on Cricket Valley

KENT — Area conservation groups concerned about the environmental impacts of the Cricket Valley Energy Center (CVEC) have agreed to form an independent multi-town task force to study the possible downwind effects of plant emissions.
The conservation commission members met at Kent Town Hall on Wednesday, July 18.
Although he said he was reluctant to head up the new task force, Mike Benjamin of Kent agreed to organize another meeting at which interested area residents can volunteer to serve. Linda Yannone of Sherman said she would help organize the meeting.

Learning that fresh is always an option

KENT — Summer is the season of warm weather, sunshine and, of course, fresh local produce. 
In Litchfield County, agriculture is still a way of life for some families, and the fresh fruits and vegetables they grow grace farmstands that range from roadside tables to elaborate buildings to actual stores.
Yet despite the abundance of locally grown fare, many people are not taking advantage of what farms have to offer, opting for the grocery store instead of farmers  markets for their weekly food shopping.

Fresh flavors of Korea in Namoo

KENT — Namoo Korean Restaurant, Kent’s newest eatery, opened its doors for business on Thursday,  June 21. Located in the Village Green shopping center across from Union Savings Bank, the restaurant has been well-received with an overall positive response from patrons.
Owners Chuck and Sarah Lee are originally from Korea. When they emigrated to the United States, they settled in New York City, where their three children were born.  Before opening Namoo, they managed the seafood departments at both Sharon Farm Market and the Bantam Market.

Board of Ed’s new grading practices are a ‘huge shift’

KENT — Kent Center School (KCS) teachers and the Board of Education hosted a community forum on Tuesday, June 19, to explain to parents and community members the new grading practices that are being introduced at the school.
Grading has been a point of contention this past school year. Region One School District Superintendent Pamela Vogel introduced new grading practices the day before the beginning of school in August 2017, leaving teachers scrambling as they tried to understand, implement and explain the procedures to parents.
