Cornwall

CORNWALL — The state’s hatchery trucks delivered some 9,000 brown and rainbow trout to the Housatonic Trout Management Area early last week.

On Friday, Sept. 13, I ventured into the river on the River Road side in Cornwall around noon, thinking I’d while away a couple of hours catching silly stocked trout.

It would make a nice change of pace from floating around a lake bothering bass.

Some six hours later, I staggered out with a sore shoulder after catching at least 70 trout, plus the odd small-mouth bass and whitefish.

Cornwall Child Center plans winter social, auction

karenb@lakevillejournal.com

CORNWALL — Ready for something a little different? This year’s Cornwall Child Center fundraiser will be a Winter Social and Vacation Home Auction on March 3, 6 to 9 p.m., at the West Cornwall Railroad Station.
The Board of Directors, which organizes fundraising for the nonprofit center, looks carefully at new approaches. Among the directors is Karolene Carlson, who has learned from experience that shaking things up can often prove very successful. The key may be in knowing the degree of change to make.

Where’s Chiapas? I know, I know

karenb@lakevillejournal.com

CORNWALL — Chiapas, site of several Mayan ruins, is the southernmost state in what country?
Jamie Murphy knows. And that knowledge won him first place in the Cornwall Consolidated School Geography Bee.
The competition was stiff. It took an overtime championship tiebreaker round for Jamie to best second-place finisher Malcolm Scott. The third-place competitor was Eliana Calhoun.

Who may serve on boards?

Out-of-towners, family members seek to volunteer
karenb@lakevillejournal.com

CORNWALL — The selectmen are chipping away at a list of vacancies on town boards and commissions.
An appeal for volunteers interested in a dozen available spots went out earlier this month. Nearly that many letters of interest were received. But it’s not that easy to fill them.
The Inland Wetlands and Water Courses Agency was popular. Three people volunteered to fill two alternate seats.

School budget planning begins

karenb@lakevillejournal.com

CORNWALL — The Board of Education is expecting a relatively quiet budget planning season. A workshop has been scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m. (the public is always invited to all board meetings) and details will no doubt be reviewed at the regular Feb. 21 meeting.
A draft proposal for a 2012-13 spending plan for Cornwall Consolidated School (CCS) is due to be presented to the Board of Finance March 8.
Principal Michael Croft said at the Jan. 17 Board of Education meeting he has two budgeting priorities for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1.

Cavanaugh raises funds for Special Olympics

Warm heart, cold water
karenb@lakevillejournal.com

CORNWALL — A little cold water doesn’t scare Julie Cavanaugh. Make that a lot of icy water.
On Feb. 4, she plans to jump into Highland Lake in Winsted as part of the Penguin Plunge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics held across the colder parts of the country each winter.
Cavanaugh lives in Cornwall Bridge. She competes in swimming on a local team, and in the Special Olympics in cross-country skiing, track and field, bowling and, you guessed it, swimming.

Finding common ground as brook scours walls, yards

karenb@lakevillejournal.com

CORNWALL — “As bad as it’s ever been.” More than one person used almost those exact words to describe the recent destruction along Mill Brook where it courses through the center of West Cornwall.
Attention has focused on the effects of Tropical Storm Irene in August, and the amazingly fast replacement of the Lower River Road bridge at the confluence of the brook and the Housatonic River.

Town shapes budget meeting calendar for fiscal year 2013

karenb@lakevillejournal.com

CORNWALL — A spending plan for the next fiscal year (July 1, 2012, through June 30, 2013) is being devised by town boards.
The Board of Selectmen (BOS) will write a proposed budget that includes salaries and expenses for operating, maintaining and improving the varied aspects of the town, including town offices and buildings, boards and commissions, recreational and other properties, highway department and emergency services, and support for area wide services.
The Board of Education (BOE) is charged with meeting all expenses of Cornwall Consolidated School.

Town seeks competitive energy grant

karenb@lakevillejournal.com

CORNWALL — The Board of Selectmen voted Jan. 11 to invest more energy in seeking energy project funding. They will apply for a state Municipal Quickspend Energy Efficiency Program grant.
Emailed applications are due Jan. 20. The offer is open to 142 Connecticut towns not eligible for direct grants from the U. S. Department of Energy. It may be stiff competition for the $300,000 in leftover funds allocated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (stimulus funds), but the state is looking for projects that can be completed quickly.

Winter parking ban outlined

karenb@lakevillejournal.com

CORNWALL — A parking ban was put in place last week by the Board of Selectmen, effective around the clock through March 30.
The restriction for vehicles parked on or close to town roads is routinely issued for the winter months to allow the highway department to keep roads clear of snow. There has been only one plow event so far this season, but winter’s fury is bound to hit later, if not sooner.
